This! Exactly! 'The latest legislative successes are an ode to all those men who spent decades furiously wanking in the shadows. Come hither, boys. It’s your moment to wank right out in the open. The state has said it’s okay.' Great 'in your face' writing!
Thank you for shedding light on this. Looks like we're in for the long haul as far as beating back legislation inspired by gender ideology is concerned. It's absolutely shocking to see how an ideology that is--on its face--so evil, dishonest and harmful has insinuated itself into so many institutions under the guise that it is good, true and beautiful.
At least Sweden is doing this in public view. In Victoria (Aus) the govt snuck all such legislation in during the covid era - no one except the TERF Army was aware.
The fact you mention that the decision makers knew long before about AGP brings forth a very disturbing conclusion: that such men pre-placed themselves in positions of decision-making and expertise specifically to advance their own self-interest. I am not a conspiracy nut but the evidence is coming out showing that my suspicions were valid - this bizarre thing has moved so fast its not believable that it is spontaneous progress.
Well, the scrutiny this received was not by design. While the politicians didn't try to hide the new law, they also had no sense of how controversial this all might be and so didn't bother touching base with the public (or skeptics within the political parties). The way I see it, this was viewed by many (underinformed) key stakeholders as simply Gay 2.0 and they didn't anticipate that there might be valid criticism of it (with complaints from others than the usual suspects, such as those who had only begrudgingly gone along with same sex marriage).
I was in a position to view a lot of this up close, and my sense is that the prime minister was genuinely shocked by the pushback this got, from within and outside his own party. He and many others completely misread what this was all about, and that public opinion might be against it. I guess what I'm getting at is that the topp brass had such a poor grasp of the situation that they didn't even think to hide it, but enough moral certitude to not bother engaging with anyone with dissenting views.
It was primarily through the action of medical experts and well-known public figures that we finally saw widespread discussion. It also helped that many of the most popular newspaper columnists (from left to right!) came out against the law. Unlike in many other countries, a substantial number of mainstream journalists are actually pretty well-informed about the reality of all this, possibly as a result of the early medical whistle-blowing that came to light in the Trans Train documentaries.
Thank you for writing about this. I would add though, that the new Swedish law doesn't require any kind of *diagnosis*. The only reason for that doctor's visit (i.e. self-ID with extra steps) is to declare to someone white coat-adjacent that you're really, really sure about your gender identity, and for that person to affirm you. There is no indication on what grounds a practitioner might refuse to affirm the "patient" in question (psychosis?), so there is no safeguarding at all. But there's not diagnosis per se.
Brilliant writing about another bizarre and disturbing tangent I wouldn’t learn about anywhere else.
